CRAFT AND SPIRIT
To Begin Again

Hello, Dear Friend.
It’s been quite a while since I last spoke to you. If in the case you wondered where I have gone and what I have been up to then I would be happy to tell you. I won’t assume, but if that is you, read on.
I believe when I last left you, I had just begun creating YouTube videos regarding the Michael Chekhov technique and other topics. I let you in on the progress of my projects, and I had mentioned I was just about to attend the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium. My aim was to become certified as a teacher and actor in the Michael Chekhov technique.
I am pleased to report that I have been awarded my certification in the Michael Chekhov technique as an actor. However, I have not yet succeeded in becoming certified as a teacher in the technique.
Let me explain why.
Throughout last year, from June of 2025 to June of 2026, between my second and third year of the consortium, I worked on the Michael Chekhov technique, but it was also when I had entered my corporate full-time job.
My work in the technique had little to do with other people; it was a purely isolated experience.
I spent over half a year writing the rough draft of a book utilizing the principles of the technique. I practiced exercises by myself in the technique, and the work that I did share publicly was still an isolated effort. Though you could argue YouTube and my Newsletters did reach people, I did not nurture a student from the beginning of a process to the end of a process.
My efforts in teaching the technique were minimal; my practice, however, was still consistent.
As a result, I, along with the heads of the Michael Chekhov Consortium, decided that I would take another year to receive my certification.
Here is part of my response to them after sending me their decision:
“[…]I have much to learn, and my ability to communicate these ideas is one of them. I can see I'm not yet strong enough, and your eye for that is vital to me. I don't need to get it right away. I can understand that the full-time job may just create a bit of a longer track, and that can give me the time I need to integrate things even more fully.
Thank you for the time that you took and the level of respect that you have given to the work that I created. The work is valuable to me, and it will exist in me for the rest of my life. I plan to continue practicing this craft forever, so let's just take it one step at a time.”
However, this is not to diminish at all my accomplishment in becoming certified as an actor in the technique. I am extremely pleased with this accomplishment.
The work itself was incredible. I met my friends once again to work alongside them for the week for multiple hours every day, up on our feet, playing and freely expressing our abilities as artists.
I met new friends as well, and through all of them I’ve solidified a further realization that artistry is my path, as it has always been.
Even still, within the next couple of months after leaving the consortium, I was struggling at my job. The corporate nature of it was beginning to wear on me; I cannot say that it has stopped yet.
But regardless, in my work there, I’ve received a promotion to a higher-paid position. A role with greater, higher-stakes responsibilities.
So there has been a good deal of work in maintaining my energy along with working on something that brings my passion to light. Being certain to help keep the true nature of my soul in sight.
To implement the notes given to me by the heads of the Michael Chekhov Consortium, I have begun a project that is collaborating with other actors.
I won’t discuss this project in much detail as of yet. Basically, it is an experiment in utilizing the Michael Chekhov Technique as a Devising tool to create a process and a product that is created from the ground up by the artists in the space.
This time I am developing a project not just between me and a piece of paper. I am developing a project with actors whom I can see, speak to, and gain valuable information regarding what is working or not working in my guidance.
I will recognize here that I have been away for far too long from writing or keeping updates going.
This is a letter to you to apologize in being gone for quite some time, but also letting you know that the best way that you can continue the practice is to return to the practice. To begin again.
And I may have to do that several times over, and it may be a lifetime of beginning again. But just as each day is a new day, each moment is another chance to begin again.
Taking up this practice has shown me results before. Not necessarily a growing public or mass audience; that hasn’t ever really been the point of these letters. The main point of each of these writings is to be able to focus and refine my understanding of the events that have occurred so that I may express them personally as a means of tracking, but even more importantly as a means to encourage and guide publicly through example.
In my practice, to take in information is only part of it; to be able to digest that information through practice is, likewise, just a part of it. But to be able to clearly offer that information to those you care about and nurture their understanding of it is, I believe, the next part of it. Seeing or hearing you walking this pathway with what you’ve gained here would be the beautiful continuation of all of this.
One must complete the cycle for it to be fully absorbed. And it ripples from there.
The continuation is here. And the mediums through which I express my understanding of things will constantly evolve as well. But it takes beginning this again.
I’ve missed you all. I’ve missed writing to you. I have been thinking about doing so for quite some time, but I will admit that with the work that I have been undergoing in getting this promotion, along with the art and actions within my art that I care deeply about, I have been spending so much energy that I have not had much left to give.
I fear that my response has been semi-overprotective. I needed to slow down the rate, but I don’t think I needed to stop altogether. However, sometimes in a long hiatus, you find out what capacity you have and have not.
Please, I would love to hear from you. What would you like to hear from my current journey as an artist finding my footing in a world that deems it necessary for corporate assimilation? And feel free to let me know how you’re doing too!
